Towards the end of the year, it wouldn’t be hard to notice the announcements of ‘annual honours’ such as ‘man of the year’, ‘newsmaker of the year’, ‘joker of the year’, ‘footballer of the year’, ‘movie of the year’ etc
The blogger’s favourite would be ‘word of the year’, word to represent how the year went by. In Japan, an organization selected ‘fake’ as their ‘word of the year’, symbolizing the rise of fake products; whilst in China the word ‘inflation’ is chosen by the chinese internet community for the obvious reason. [citation needed]
the.bigger.picture’s suggestion for Malaysia’s ‘Word of the Year 2007’ is
Of course that word HAS NO CONNECTION AND DOES NOT INDICATE whatsoever Parliament roof bocor, Parliamentarian mouth bocor, Court buildings bocor, ozone layer bocor etc.
And 'bocor' certainly DOES NOT METAPHORICALLY SUGGEST our country’s Judiciary bocor, prosecution bocor, Public fund bocor, PKFZ scandal bocor, Lingam tape bocor, Exam question bocor…I REPEAT again..it Does Not represent so.
No way our dearest and wisest and most honourable PM would allow these nuisances to occur, Right? (readers must be nodding their head wildly in agreement)
The blogger selected that particular word as his house toilet pipe has been LEAKING water all year long.
Guys and gals out there, I would be glad to hear any other suggestions for ‘Word of the Year’!
Happy New Year everybody!! Cheers!

UK universities=World class??? Think twice…
UK, on the other hand, is the so-called ‘powerhouse of world-class education institutions’ with UK qualifications marketed globally as a world-wide recognition. In a nutshell, employers and students in the east practically worship Western qualifications for all its reputation and fame.
However, most (if not all) UK higher education institutions do not possess any ISO recognition from any awarding body (there are a few of them). This shocking and worrying situation causes me to cast a serious doubt on the quality of educating that UK universities claim to provide.
Without ISO recognitions, are they truly world-class?
For this reason, I embark on my journey all the way to the country in question itself, UK, for a thorough investigation. I conducted surprise visits to two renowned UK universities, University of Sheffield (shef) and University of Cambridge (camb). After days of ‘painstaking’ examination and observation (sightseeing), the conclusion I can make is most shocking of all-
Behold…
UK UNIVERSITIES will never attain ISO RECOGNITION! NEVER!!!
1. Financial wastage
The most obvious reason is the serious financial mismanagement that occurred in both universities’ administration.
How, you ask? It’s the money they wasted on entertaining a nuisance like ME, pcwan!!
Camb, for instance, provided me with 2nights-accommodation as well as 3 meals per day (buffet style) for 2 days in Kings College’s medieval dining hall.
Shef provided me a personal tour around the university guided by a PhD student as well as a one-to-one introductory session with a senior officer.
Foreign students, in world-class nations, should be treated with suspicion and discrimination. Why? Simple. They are either potential illegal immigrants or night-club waitress.
The amount of time and money UK universities spent on attracting and welcoming foreigners like me is outrageous, and certainly a resource wastage.
2. LACK of ‘security’
Throughout my few-days-visit, I felt ‘greatly unsecured’ by the fact that NO SECURITY GUARDS are seen in and around both uni (they do employ guards of course).
The only ‘security features’ I can notice is the amazing amount of CCTVs and this
3. Crooked culture (budaya songsang)
Still, world class students are suppose to wear a dog tag..no no, i mean name tag to reveal their sacred identity of belonging to a world class university.
I saw no tags on students of both uni.
This phenomenon is an indication of the existence of crooked culture.
No name tags=not world class
4. Architecture
I grew up in a society which sees great buildings as new, big and tall.
Old buildings should make way for new buildings simply because demolition is always cheaper than maintenance.
(left) UiTM (highest uni campus structure in M’sia); ?m(certainly taller than 78m); 21st Century
(middle) Arts Tower, University of Shef (highest uni campus structure in UK); 78m; 1960’s
(right) Kings College Chapel, Cambridge (highest structure in Cambridge); 16th Century
Using height and building age as my parameter, I can conclude that UK universities are worthless.
5. No University buses provided
The financial deprivation of UK universities is obvious as both uni do not have their own bus service to ferry students from accommodations to campus.
What kind of UNI expects students to travel on public transportation????
(to my horror later, its true. Public transportation in UK is punctual to the minute)
Both uni even went as far as ‘students are encouraged to walk or cycle’.
6. Out-of-Control Student’s Union
Student’s Union (known in M’sian uni as Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar) in both uni I went to simply echo the prejudice we always have against western students-- UNCIVILISED!
Harsh?? Maybe…
but the activities they organized are very much ridiculous. From late night parties in 'Bar One’ Sheffield to ‘Yoga Meditation Session ’ along River Cam, all managed by students, for students.
It’s simply unspeakable.
This is what I found in Sheffield Union’s pamphlets
CROOKED CULTURE!! Uncivilised!!!(DISCLAIMER: the blogger wish to express no disrespects to LGBT students. It is SIMPLY intended to reflect the conservative moral climate, judgemental attitude and discrimination held by the society the blogger lives in)
Referendum?? voices heard?? Awareness??The sound that students can dictate university and government policy just drives me crazy!!
Students aren’t adults!! They are small little kids who don’t know what they are thinking and should concentrate ONLY on studying (and watching TVs) rather than politics!!
7. Vandalism
Vandalism in UK uni is striving without any attention from authorities.
Sheffield Hallam University building walls ‘vandalised’ by poets.
Sheffield Uni students pasting up posters in campus without approval from HEP (Students Affair Department) whatsoever.
Why aren’t actions being taken??
8. Too many museums
Camb spent an outrageous amount of money on maintaining its museums and galleries, and most of them charge its visitors and tourists NOTHING (of course they do gain incomes from gift shops and donations).
This is Fitzwilliam Museum, a better known museum in Cambridge. Goodness, they spent 5million pounds a year on maintenance alone.
Of all the things you can spend your money on…
Why museum?? Why not fireworks? Why not on student camps, visits, sports carnivals?
Imagine how many MALAYSIAN RECORDS attempt a uni can make with that amount of money and manpower!!?!?!
Why museum??
9. Lawless campus environment
Students are supposed to maintain strict self-discipline and respect their universities at all cost instead of making a joke out of it. In world-class universities, students are guarded with strict laws and regulations to prevent students from tarnishing university’s good name.
Nevertheless, as an applicant to both University of Cambridge and Sheffield, amazingly, I can still find the guts (and time) to make stupid jokes about them on my blog without any fear.

Thank You theSun
I hereby wish to acknowledge and salute the<span style="font-size:180%;color:#ff0000;">Sun newspaper,
-for the courage to stride through the storm of critisms from our nation's highest echelon, as high as the minister of Information himself
-for the reporting of Lingam Tape scandal, even when your owner is allegedly involved
-for the amazing strength to defy restrictions on reporting censored events, eg Bersih, BAR council protests, at the risk of losing your license.
-for providing outcasts the platform to speak out, eg Tun Dr M, A.I. , opposition leaders, bloggers, protestors
-for uncovering the many ugly scenes behind our nation's administration, eg the Port Klang Free Zone billion ringgit scandal, Istana Datuk Zakaria, MBPJ ad-board scandal
-for the professionalism in presenting neutral, unbiased, truely Bangsa Malaysia reports, when many others choose to take sides
-for printing critical and painful letters and opinions usually thrown away by editors
-last but not least, for the deliverance of outstanding journalism, not seen in any other mainstream newspapers, throughout 2007, the year of turbulence and 'bocor'-ful administration
thank you for feeding me every weekday morning throughout the second half of 2007
though your voice may not be as vocal as other so-called 'Best-Seller' (and expensive) newspapers, rest assured that the hardwork and risk your editors and jornalists have taken will not go unnoticed by thousands of readers across this blessed land
as i always like to joke, the</span><span style="color:#ff0000;">SUN is always brighter than the moon and 'THE STAR'
Malaysians are craving for news, rather than official statements!!!
Cheers!

painful...
It was only until today that i read a transcript i downloaded from the net months ago, an interview of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, S'pore Minister Mentor by two renowed American scholar-journalist.
A small part of the lengthy interview struck me deep.
Speaking from a Singaporean perspective, he said:
"When [Malaysia] kicked us [Singapore] out in 1965, the expectation was that we would fail and we will go back on their terms, not on the terms we agreed with them under the British. Our problems are not just between states, this is a problem between races and religions and civilizations. We (Singaporeans) are a standing indictment of all the things that they (Malaysians) can be doing differently. They have got all the resources. If they would just educate the XXXXXXX and XXXXXXX, use them and treat them as their citizens, they can equal us and even do better than us and we would be happy to rejoin them."
Controversial words indeed.
Certainly, Malaysia-Singapore reuniting is all but a rubbish talk.
Yet, as I ponder back across the narrow straits, into my Malaysia, my homeland..
those words struck me so deep, painfully deep...

Al-i and Al-Gore
(the surroundings was pathetically noisy due to the fierce protest outside the conference)
Al Gore: Hi. Welcome to Bali!
Mr Ali: Ya! I am very happy to be in Bali! 3 days conference, 7 days cuti. hehe..
Al Gore: (?) Anyway, I am very much concerned about the report claiming that Malaysia has the highest increment rate of carbon emission in the world.
Mr Ali: What increment??
Al Gore: ‘Carbon emission’ increment, sir.
Mr Ali: Huh? Oh, Royal Commission? Oh… sure, we have already set up royal commission regarding the ‘so-called’ judiciary scandal (winking his left eye) But anyway I tell you, its all conspiracy la.
Al Gore: Conspiracy? Are you saying that the emission statistic is a conspiracy?
Mr Ali: Huh? (Pretending that he understands) Oh…oh ya sure, election is near, the opposition has no agenda so they made up these ‘commission’ and ‘protests’ to get attention. All protestors are useless.
Al Gore: What? Are you claiming that the environmental protests here in Bali are also useless?

Mr Ali: (still pretends he understands) Environment? Oh..yes yes, Protestors walk out on streets, sure spoil the environment. Look at those stupid penguins...Protesting is not a Malaysian cultural. Of course they are useless.
Al Gore: ok…so how about the problem of illegal logging in Malaysia?
Mr Ali: Illegal blogging?? ya its a pain in the ass, but you see, our country upholds freedom of speech. so we are not taking any actions, wait and see la...
Al Gore: (eyes opening wide) wait and see? You still don’t want to do take actions against logging? Your government wants to be like Indonesian government which allows open burning?
(surroudings gets noisier)
Mr Ali: Burning? Burning flags? Oh sure. Except for Malaysian flags, we proudly encourage our citizens to burn flags, especially American and Israel flags.
Al Gore: What?!? Don’t you realize that illegal logging, open burning and all these environmental problems can lead to social unrest??
Mr Ali: Rest? No no, we don’t rest! (shaking his head) We keep on ARREST! If our we are incapable of pressing charges, we use ISA! No problem! Arrest! That’s how we solve problems.
Al Gore: No sir I mean ‘social unrest’… not…
(Mr Ali interrupts)..Yes yes…'SOCIAL ARREST'.. .yes...
Al Gore: Fine. fine. (shaking his head) Anyway, in this conference, I am going to propose a draft for stronger actions to protect the environment. Will the Malaysian government support the draft?
Mr Ali: Draft? What draft?? What? You mean HINDRAF?? That bunch of crazy maniacs? (shouting) NO NO, no way we are not going to support any drafts!
Al Gore: No, no, I mean.. (Mr Ali interrupts again) You Americans are idiots. You don’t understand Malaysia. No draft… no draft…
Al Gore: Wait, I meant an environmental protection draft. Don’t Malaysians care about global warming?
Mr Ali: GLOBAL WAR<span style="font-size:180%;">N</span>ING? What? You want to give us warning?!?! You stupid Americans want to interfere on our business again? You think we scared?
Lu ingat lu siapa ^&£%&*^&!%£^?
(Mr Ali walks away, leaving behind a bewildered Al Gore)
The moral of the story:
Don’t claim that you have a big ear when you can’t (or don’t want to) hear
DISCLAIMER: The above conversation is purely fictional. The blogger wish to express NO DISRESPECT to Mr Al Gore, anyone by the name ‘Ali’, any representatives of Malaysian Government, members of the HINDRAF movement, protestors in KL and Bali, and anyone who thinks that he has a BIG EAR.
